Inventory crafting
1 Open up your inventory by pushing the "I" key.
2 Left-Click to select the items you want to craft with from your inventory, and left-click again at the spot in the 2x2 crafting grid where you want to drop them. NOTE: If you want to drop fewer than the full stack of something into the grid, instead of left-clicking, right-click instead to drop them one at a time.
3 Once you have dropped a correct pattern into the grid in sufficient quantities to create at least one batch of the finished product, that finished product will appear at the right of the crafting grid.
4 Left-click on the product to select it and left-click again into your inventory to subtract the materials, create the product, and add it to your inventory. NOTES: If you would like to create multiples of the product, instead of left-clicking on it in the result box, right-click instead. Once you've done so, you can right-click instead of left-clicking in your inventory to pick up fewer than the total number of produced items.
5 To use a new product, left-click on them and place them in your quick-inventory bar.
6 Close your inventory using the "I" key.

Workbench crafting:

1 Create a workbench by using the above process to turn a log from a tree into 4 pieces of wood, then the 4 pieces of wood arranged 1 in each space of the 2x2 inventory crafting grid into a workbench. Add the workbench to your quick-inventory bar and set it down on the ground by mouse-wheeling till it is selected and right-clicking in the world where you want to put it.
2 Right-click on the placed workbench to open up the workbench 3x3 crafting window.
3 Left-Click to select the items you want to craft with from your inventory, and left-click again at the spot in the 3x3 crafting grid where you want to drop them. NOTE: If you want to drop fewer than the full stack of something into the grid, instead of left-clicking, right-click instead to drop them one at a time.
4 Once you have dropped a correct pattern into the grid in sufficient quantities to create at least one batch of the finished product, that finished product will appear at the right of the crafting grid.
5 Left-click on the product to select it and left-click again into your inventory to subtract the materials, create the product, and add it to your inventory. NOTES: If you would like to create multiples of the product, instead of left-clicking on it in the result box, right-click instead.
