MicroVolts- Review

  • Once again, Steam offers a new Free to Play title to spend our free time trough granades and bullets! MicroVolts is a Third Person Shooter that take his soul directly from Valve’s Team Fortress. This game with its little character take some of his aspect also from the Disney’s Toy Story but surely most of the game idea on the Joe Dante’s film “ Small Soldiers”.
    -
    This game has been published in U.S.A and in Europe by RockHippo, a brand new Canadian publisher founded on 2009, while the game development has been assigned to NQ Games, brother company of SK Group, a South Korean software house born in 2011.
    -
    The download of the game is pretty fast, just 2 GB that thanks to Steam’s server we could download it at the highest and steady speed. The game could be downloaded with a decent connection in about 30 minutes, or even less. MicroVolts could also be downloaded directly from the publisher’s site, by bypassing Steam each time, but you’ll not have the Steam’s achievement, obviously.

  • Tiny Soldiers, Big Warfare
  • -

    In MicroVolts we’ll be an action figure that has to survive by engaging fights against other action figures! The name of the game is an obvious reference of the charge of the batteries that make the toys characters able to work in this crazy war for the control of the toy’s city. The AA- Battery is so the symbol of the game itself, it also appear often in the whole game, for example the HP of our alter ego is shown as a battery.
    -
    In the Menu we could view all the points earned during the game sessions, or the remaining points to spend on the store, even in this represented by the famous AA battery.
    -
    The game’s mechanics is nothing than the classic Third Person Shooter’s style, with the classic WASD control for the movements, Space Bar for jumping which could be a single jump when using rifles and any ranged weapons, instead double when using the melee. The weapons available ingame are 7, which could be selected by he scroll button of the mouse or just by using the numeric keys. Each weapon is different and well balanced. For example the Sniper Rifle is a one shot one kill weapon, but it is also pretty hard to use, not even talking about how much time it require to load the next bullet. Same goes for the Rocket Launcher which is extremely powerful, but the rocket isn’t very fast so the enemy is still able to avoid the shot. Or the Minigun , that is powerful as well but it also require the barrel to rotate before the first bullet could be shot, after having left clicked. It’s obvious that the ShotGun can’t be missed, extremely useful on short range combats. And finally the rifle which is the main weapon and even the most balanced one.

  • Maps & Game Modes
  • -
    There are a very good amount of maps, well different from each other. Each map has his own main theme and a specific dimension, mostly created for 4 up to 16 players. Since the characters are nothing than toys, the game’s maps are big versions of dioramas, that include for example a great kitchen and wide garden. There are also some custom maps that really remember those from Unreal Tournament old games. But there are also some maps that are maybe too much little and poorly tactical, this is not a good point regarding the fact that it is still a shooting game, especially if regarding the classic FPS arena games available.
    -
    The game modes are nothing than the classics, but also contain some unique too: Team DeathMatch, Free for All, Capture the Battery (Flag), Item Match, Close Combat, Elimination, Arms Race, Invasion, Scrinmage and Zombie:
    -

    1. Team Death Match, Free For All and Capture the Battery and Elimination: Are all that mode available in all shooting games, third or first person, so them are pretty known.
      -
    2. Item Match: Is a special version of Team Death Match, where when you or a team mate kill an opponent player, he’ll drop a random item which can be taken. Each player could carry only 1 item.
      -
    3. Close Combat : Is a Team Death Match where the only weapons available are the Melees.
      -
    4. Arms Race: Similar to Gun Game from CoD series, this game’s objective is to reach 20 kills by killing the other players in a FFA Mode. Each time you reach a certain amount of kill, you weapon will be changed. Basically you’ve to use each of the 7 different type of weapon to kill your opponents. There are about 4 weapons available for each type of weapon, and in oder to pass to the other weapon you’ve to kill:
      -
      1= Rifle
      5= Shotgun
      8 = Sniper
      12 = Gatling Gun
      14 = Rocket
      17 = Grenade Launcher

      -
      But you’ll return to the previous weapon if get killed by a melee weapon.
      -
    5. Invasion: Is the classic mode where you have to play against the computer. But unfortunately this game allow only 1 player, that have to survive against each enemies wave, each 5 rounds a Boss appear. Also if the player die the game finish, the mode could be played in Easy, that allow the player to play as much they would, and a Hard that allow only 3 times per 8 hours.
      -
    6. ScrinMage: Is the classic Clan Arena from Quake saga, where the players have 5000 HP and have to beat the enemy team in order to win.
      -
    7. Zombie: In this mode, which nowadays is considered as classic as well, the toys will turned into deads. The game start by choosing some random players that get infected by a virus, those player have only the melee weapon but they are also very fast and really hard to take down. If all the players got infected the zombie wins. If even only 1 normal player win, the whole team wins.

  • Game System
  • -

    • This game is created on the Free To Play System, but it unfortunately turns into a Pay To Win, since the paying user are always advantaged. As in other games, we find the ingame currency, Micro Points that can be earned by killing and having a good kill death ratio, and the real money currency, Rock Tokens. The Community is well placed in this game, since if a player has 20 friends in his buddy list, he’ll receive some Micro Points, or if he had linked his Facebook account to the game. Obviously there is also the achievement system, which reward the most valuable players. The store offers several weapons, items that can be used in the middle of the combat, such as defensive items. Those items can be bought by temporary usage. There are also some useful objects that can be used in Zombie Mode, that often make the difference between a lose or a win.

  • Graphic & Audio
  • -
    By giving a first view to the game aspects, it is sure that several things may could be better designed, the icons and menu aren’t great on a visive impact and instead of being simple, most of the time make a mess and are also pretty hard to be read. Instead on the graphic view the engine is works finely, but the texture are pretty low defined . Unfortunately even the character’s model aren’t all that great as well, the animation are also pretty repetitive. The smoke and explosion effect works, but surely do not impress for their quality.
    -
    The Audio is most probably the worst part of the game. First of all the audio and sound effect aren’t very authentic , but the most worst thing is that the audio engeneering isn’t well realized some sometimes you’ll hear some far noises as to be really near to your character, a bug that will annoy the players who uses the sound to detect the enemies.
    Even the musics are nothing than the emulation of those from Team Fortress, but them are very far from its quality.

    _____________________________________________________________________________________________

    MicroVolts, so could be a somewhat funny game, but it surely do not thrill due to the poor gameplay and the cartoon style too much similar to other games, Team Fortress mainly, especially regarding the design, musics and graphic, which unfortunately lead with a comparison between those 2 titles, and inevitably bring MicroVolts to be beaten on each side.
