Oh ArcheAge, If there ever was a game that could suck our social life away like in the old Everquest days this would be the one. If we listed all the features of this title you would be collecting social security before you finished reading. So I'll just mention some of our favorite features and once you find the holy grail you can read up on the rest.
First off, this game is BEAUTIFUL! The perfect mix between fantasy and realism, the landscape and characters are remarkable. It's the sort of game that you could spend your first two hours just staring over the water, mouth agape like the OMG Cat, wondering why you would ever want to go outside again. It's that pretty. The major selling point of the game would have to be its attention to detail; there is something for everyone. If you wish to live your days building ships and pillaging the coasts, go right ahead. If you’d rather farm, raise animals and plant trees, go right ahead. If you want to murder travelers and live out your days in jail, well you can do that too. ArcheAge is the Sandbox game that all of us brokenhearted SWG players have been hoping for. Not only that but it has just enough theme park features to keep the new wave of gamers happy too. Just a warning, before you play this make sure you have plenty of food and water nearby because you will be living at your computer now.
Planetside 2 by Sony Online Entertainment promises to be one of the greatest massive multiplayer first-person shooters ever created. Three unique factions in political turmoil fight over the planet’s resources in a struggle for dominance.
PS2 boasts an in-depth character customization: everything from dense class skill trees, vehicle and ship equipment and many options to design the color and look of your gear to fit your tastes or match clan colors.
SOE promises battles on a truly massive scale and if they can pull it off right, this game will be magisterial. Imagine a massive open world where hundreds of players can duke it out in a single battle, fighting with soldiers, tanks, vehicles and ships. It's enough hyperactivity to turn anyone's brain into a gelatinous pile of jelly (hyberbole intended).
So if you're into first-person shooters or MMOs this is going to be the game to play in 2013.
Ncsoft has done it again! Guild Wars 2 is not only one of the best looking games on the market to date but it also runs like a dream! The world of Tyria is a massive work of art that is carefully crafted at every point of the game, never once did I see a single piece of landscape that wasn't beautiful enough to be my desktop wallpaper. And when your brain has finally adapted to all the eye candy, it’s time for some questing the likes of which you've never seen. NCsoft really put the effort into the mission system in this game so it works seamlessly with organic exploration. And if that's not enough, you can grind some experience in some enormous PvP battles or polished crafting system.
Guild Wars 2 is going to be around a long while, my friends. And the best part of that is NO SUBCRIPTION FEE! Woohoo! That's right, after you buy the box you get to play your characters until you're blue in the face; never having to spend a dime. There is however a premium shop for those of you that like the finer things in life. Everything from outfits, dyes, utility equipment and even a game upgrade is available. Coolest part about this is you can trade in-game gold with players to get the gems to buy all those shineys. We recommend picking this up. No subscription fee = No pressure, and we like that.
Set a Thousand years before Skyrim, Elder Scrolls Online boasts some major features that will push the MMO world further into the future. First off, there are no shards (different servers) just one mega server all players are on at the same time. This means no more jumping servers to play with your friends. This new smart system will automatically put you in the same game space as all your pals and guildmates! The game is set up to support hundreds of players on the screen at one time, that means massive battles and raid objectives the likes of which the MMO world has never seen.
The class system is extremely flexible; your character can use any item and armor combination you wish. That means you can be a tanky archer or a sword wielding mage, even a stealthy healer. Flexibility is good!
For those of you that enjoy questing you'll be in for a refreshing system in ESOL. Questing is based off exploration. You'll be able to explore new areas and uncover quests in real time. And after you complete those quests, your choices will have a lasting impact on the world.
Whether you're an Elder Scrolls fan or an MMO fan you should keep a watchful eye on this release as it is sure to continue to evolve favorably.
If you haven't heard of Everquest then you haven't been in the MMO gaming world long. Sony Online Entertainment has been creating content for their Everquest worlds for over a decade and with this upcoming sandbox successor, "Everquest Next", all us EQ dorks are salivating at the chops for a chance to dive in.
SOE has done a good job keeping the secrets of Everquest Next tightly under wraps. But what they have given us are some incredible concept art. "Largest sandbox MMO ever designed", said SEO's John Smedley when talking about Everquest Next. For those of us that loved the early days of SWG this is a welcome statement, and we can only hope it lives up to our sweetest EQ memories.
Speaking of sandboxes! The Repopulation brings together all the great features we remember from our favorite sandbox treasures (Star Wars Galaxies, Fallen Earth, Ultima Online) and puts them into one sweet looking title. You will be able to build your own custom bases with a layout all your own. Everything from furniture, plants and barricades can be crafted in their in- depth crafting system. This sci-fi indie project may give other major titles a serious run for their money.
Square Enix has a lot to prove after the initial launch of Final Fantasy XIV, and this is a very good thing! FFXIV has been rebuilt from the ground up by an entirely new development team that has redesigned, re-skinned, and re-imagined the whole world of Eorzea. With the bad launch of FFXIV, Square Enix s nearly perfect batting average was tarnished in a big way. So you can bet that Final Fantasy XIV A Realm Reborn is going to be one monster of a game! And the best part is, if you bought the original version of FFXIV you get to play A Realm Reborn free.
Built on the foundations of DarkFall 1.0, DarkFall Unholy Wars has streamlined its user interface and updated the graphics across the whole world. A new combat system will likely bring in a whole new generation of DarkFall players filling out the world with massive amounts of people to befriend or destroy!
With the new class system fights will be more strategic and less about stringing together macros. Players will be able to switch between classes so when you get tired of swinging a sword you can start hurling fireballs.
DarkFall 1.0 owners of the game will get a copy of DarkFall Unholy Wars for free, this is a very nice move on Aventurine's part. This will reward those loyal veterans and hopefully keep them in the game. If you're looking for a new sort of MMO, something that will get your blood pumping every time you head out into the world you won’t wanna miss this one.
In Path of Exile, the player has been exiled from their homeland to the corrupt and deeply hostile continent of Wraeclast. Alone, or with other exiles, they must develop their skills and discover powerful magical artifacts in order to survive the challenges of a cutthroat, post-apocalyptic fantasy world.
Some would call this the spiritual successor to Diablo II and I would have to agree, the colors, play style and over all feel of the game has a far more Diablo flavor than even D3. The flexibility of classes and abilitys is what make this game really stand out. Instead of being forced to use class specific spells, you can quite literally use any spell in the game. Every ability and skill is tied into gems that you can embed into weapons, shields and other gear.
This game is still under NDA so I highly suggest you sign up for the beta and take a look for yourself.
The brains behind EVE Online and DUST 514 bring you their next sandbox masterpiece "World of Darkness". WOD is based in the lush role playing landscape of "Vampire the Masquerade" an IP that has been around for over twenty years with thousands of loyal fans. Unlike EVE Online, CCP plans to make World of Darkness a much more social game with a detailed storyline and history. The barrier for entry will be far lower as well, in comparison to their other titles. The game has great focus on fashion, character development and conquest.
World of Darkness will have far more theme park elements than anything previously released by CCP. So don't expect a WOW clone experience. There will be serious hardcore mechanic where your actions will have consequences and dying in game actually means something!
